A plain-English overview of the Department of Social Services Data Exchange: what providers report, when it is due and how it is submitted.

The Data Exchange (DEX) is the Australian Government Department of Social Services' system for program performance reporting. It has been in use since 1 July 2014 and covers most client-based DSS programs, along with some programs funded by other departments.
Reporting works in both directions. Providers submit data about their clients and services, and the department shares information back through self-service reports.
DSS states that there are no negative consequences for providers who choose not to take part in the partnership approach. Check your grant agreement, as some programs set their own requirements.
DEX uses two six-month reporting periods: 1 January to 30 June, and 1 July to 31 December. Providers can submit data daily, weekly or monthly, but all data must be submitted within 30 days after the close of each period.
There are three ways to get data into DEX: the web-based portal, bulk upload, or system-to-system transfer from a provider's own client management system.

Do other departments use DEX?
Yes. Some programs funded outside DSS also report through it. Your funder will confirm whether yours does.
